World community congratulates Astana on its 10th anniversary
|From now on Kazakhstan has one more national holiday. It is Day of the Capital. The new state holiday is called to symbolize the Kazakh people's achievements in the history of independent Kazakhstan. |
In the mid-1990s, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev took a wise decision Ц then unexpected for many, and yet fateful Ц to remove the capital from Almaty in the South to the very heart of our country, to a then-provincial city Akmola. And within a short period of time Astana, as Akmola was renamed afterwards, turned into an epicenter of economic, political and cultural life for Kazakhstan.
All Kazakhstanis think today that construction of the capital is not only successful but also is one of the large-scale urban projects of the modernity. It showed huge potential of the independent Kazakhstan. The President's programme "Development of Astana-development of Kazakhstan" has come true. The development of Astana gave an impulse to the enhancement of industries and regions, creation of new production lines and workplaces, drastic changes of transport and communications infrastructure.
Actually no one doubts that Astana has already contributed its golden page to the history of the young sovereign nation of Kazakhstan, Kazinform reports. Astana emerged from the ambition to create not only a national capital but also a national identity. Astana has become a unifying idea for Kazakh people, and as Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of National Capital Territory of Delhi puts it in her congratulatory message to her Kazakh counterpart Imangali Tasmagambetov "in the development of Astana the credit should be given to Kazakhstan's leader". She opines that "The rapid growth of Astana is testimony to farsighted and visionary leadership of President Nursultan Nazarbayev as also the dedication and commitment of the people of Kazakhstan".
"Astana is a powerful catalyst and a locomotive of the country's socio-economic development. Gross Regional Product for the past 10 years increased 17 times, the volume of investments grew more that 20 times. 10% of the country's GDP falls on the capital. In the nearest future Astana will turn into the largest industrial centre of Kazakhstan," Kanat Saudabayev, Kazakh Secretary of State said at the conference devoted to the 10th anniversary of Astana in Almaty.
According to Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Singapore to Kazakhstan Sim Cheok Leem, "for past ten years Astana come up to the modern capital symbolizing Kazakhstan's striving for the future. Development of Astana is the substantial attainment of the young capital. I'm honored to witness Astana's development. Every time on the way from the airport to Astana I couldn't help admiring the city amidst the flat Kazakh steppe. Kazakhstan is a comparatively new state and is ready to meet the 21 century challenges. Astana embodies determination of Kazakhstan people and far-sightedness of President Nursultan Nazarbayev and the authorities in meeting the present-day challenges and deriving benefit from them for further development of the state."
Singapore Parliament Speaker Abdullah Tarmugi believes that Astana is indicative of the nation's economic growth. "Astana is a new and modern city, well-designed, functional and attractive one. Moreover, Astana is an energetic city full of life and dynamism. Astana is a city of high, sparkling new buildings, competing in height, broad streets; a centre of hope and aspirations of the people. Not only the buildings and the construction boom, but also the people determined to face challenges of the future and to follow the ever-changing world astound the people. All this is the result of the concept, farsightedness and leadership of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, measures and efforts of the Government, business circles and heads of the country's organizations. Astana symbolizes the hope and destiny of the nation."
Speaking of the prospects of Astana's development Kazakh Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Bakhyt Ospanov reminded of the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's words that the major construction works in Astana will have finished by 2012. "The grand mission of Astana city is to become a model capital of the Eurasian region, initiator of sustainable and dynamic development of Kazakhstan," the diplomat emphasized.
There's no disputing the fact that Astana has also become the centre of international activity already. You may recall one of the most unique international events Ц the regular Congress of World and Traditional Religions, initially proposed by Nursultan Nazarbayev. Astana was awarded a special prize of UNESCO as City of Peace In July 1999. It also was highly evaluated by Moody's Investors Service in 2003.
According to deputy Chairman of the Nur Otan People's Democratic Party Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, then the first Akim of Astana who had to start work from scratch, Astana shoots up and changes drastically. "And our plans become more large-scale: we'd like to see the city with competitive economy, high culture, and attractive for the nationals and foreigners. In Mr. Dzhaksybekov's view Astana should become an exemplary capital in Eurasia, a center of Kazakhstan's sustainable development, a centre of attraction not only for investments but also the core of economic growth, large megapolis. Today both critics and supporters judge the President's idea to move the capital on its merits".
Thus, on 6 July Astana and Kazakhstan at large together with friends celebrated the Capital's Day and President Nursultan Nazarbayev's birthday.
Heads of foreign countries, namely Russia Ц Dmitry Medvedev, Kyrgyzstan Ц Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Azerbaijan Ц Ilham Aliyev, Tajikistan Ц Emomali Rahmon, Armenia Ц Serzh Sarkisyan, Georgia Ц Mikhail Saakashvili, Turkmenistan Ц Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, Turkey Ц Abdullah Gul and King of Jordan Abdullah II took part in festive events dedicated to the holiday celebration.
