|Foreign ministers representing the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) expressed their support for the active role of Russia in the settlement of the conflict in South Ossetia. The relevant statement was signed by the foreign ministers of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan after the session of the Council of CSTO Foreign Ministers held in Moscow. |
The foreign ministers called for a peaceful settlement of the South Ossetia conflict and termed the Georgia's actions in S. Ossetia as unacceptable.
Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Lavrov expressed his satisfaction with the statement. According to him, the document spells out the arguments for the unacceptability of the repetition of the conflict in the S. Ossetia region. The document also gives an assessment of the activities related to the conflict, including the application of double standards. He added that the foreign ministers of the CSTO member states agreed to use this statement as a basis for coordinated actions within the framework of international organizations.
The session of the Council of CSTO Foreign Ministers considered the agenda of the CSTO session which will be held on the level of heads of state in Moscow on 5 September. According to Sergei Lavrov, the session will feature the military cooperation and interstate programmes.
