| The Azerbaijani and Uzbek presidents - Ilham Aliyev and Islam Karimov - discussed on Thursday, 11 September, afternoon bilateral relations, the regional situation and topical international issues. |
The presidents first had a one-to-one meeting and then a meeting with the participation of delegations.
The negotiations of the Azerbaijani and Uzbek presidents resulted in signing of eight intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements. The sides signed agreements on cooperation in the field of environmental protection, information and communication technologies, development of railway transport and combined transport, protection of secret information, tax, as well as in the humanitarian sphere, trade and economic, and scientific and technical fields.
Speaking to journalists, the presidents expressed their satisfaction with the results of the talks. The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, said that the visit of his Uzbek counterpart to Azerbaijan assumes great significance. The Head of State said that the results of this visit will play an exceptional role in the further co-operation of the two countries. Noting that Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan have strong positions in their regions, Ilham Aliyev emphasized the importance of this factor from the point of view of the regional co-operation.
President Ilham Aliyev mentioned the significance of the signed documents. "This will deepen further co-operation between our countries. Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan support each other in the international organizations as well. We want peace to be established in the region and the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to find its solution within the framework of the international legal standards," President of Azerbaijan said. He also noted the importance of deepening economic ties with Uzbekistan.
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov said that at the meeting with Ilham Aliyev they in detail discussed the wide circle of questions. It was noted that positions coincide in the majority of questions. "Eight documents were signed at the inter-state and inter-governmental level. Concluding even more than 8 contracts is the most important pulse for the development of our relations, and it will provide a good base for the development of mutually beneficial joint projects," said Islam Karimov.
"We came to a common opinion regarding expanding interaction of South Caucasus and Central Asia," noted the President of Uzbekistan. He stated that the weighed pragmatic foreign policy of the President of Azerbaijan transformed the country into one of the leading centers of the logistics connecting the East with the West and the North with the South.
Touching upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Islam Karimov said that "the Uzbek side noted that it has always supported, supports and will support the peaceful solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In this case, we consider the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan one of the main conditions. We consider that the solution proposed by the Azerbaijani side is the most optimum in every respect. I speak on my behalf, but I am sure that all those, who objectively track Karabakh problem will join my opinion".
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov arrived in Azerbaijan for two-day official visit on the invitation of this country's President Ilkham Aliyev.
